Spurs transfer news: AVB interested in Martinez
19th June 2013 8:30pm BST
Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas is considering making a move to bring Jackson Martinez to White Hart Lane from former club FC Porto.
The Portuguese coach wants to add to his striking options this summer after his two recognised forwards - Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe - managed only 16 league goals between them last term.
The Togolese frontman is expected to be on his way out of Tottenham during the transfer window with Villas-Boas wanting a more prolific striker as the Lilywhites attempt to get back in the Champions League next season.
And SportsDirect News sources say the Spurs boss has put Martinez high on his transfer wishlist after the Colombia international, who has confirmed there is interest in him, scored 26 times in 20 league games during Porto’s title-winning campaign of 2012-2013.
Pinto da Costa, Porto’s president, is known to be just as hard a negotiator as Spurs’ Daniel Levy so it is likely to take a club record bid to convince the Portuguese outfit to let go of their star frontman.
However, Villas-Boas is confident that he will be provided with significant transfer funds this summer after rejecting Paris Saint-Germain’s recent advances for him.
The north Londoners will also need to bring in quality additions to persuade Gareth Bale to turn down any offer from Spanish giants Real Madrid who are expected to make a huge bid for the Wales international before the start of next season.
