Arsenal transfer news: Gunners keen on Al-Habsi
12th July 2013 2:43pm BST
Arsenal are ready to make a cut-price bid for Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi.
The Gunners had wanted Queens Park Rangers stopper Julio Cesar to provide competition for current stoppers Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski – though the Brazilian is currently in advanced talks with Italian side Napoli.
And SportsDirect News has learned boss Arsene Wenger has begun to explore other options, with Al-Habsi under serious consideration.
The Oman international made 29 Premier League appearances last season, though his performances were not enough to keep the Latics in the Premier League.
However, Wigan’s drop into the Championship has strengthened Wenger’s position, and has seen Al-Habsi’s asking price drop from £7 million to £4m, though the Frenchman will still have to deal with chairman Dave Whelan’s tough negotiating tactics to land the 31-year-old.
Whelan has already seen first-team stars Antolin Alcaraz and Arouna Kone jump ship to join former boss Roberto Martinez at Everton, and would be loath to lose his first-choice stopper.
