Man City transfer news: Race on for "new Nasri"
15th July 2013 10:02am BST
Manchester City target Florian Thauvin has requested showdown talks with his Ligue 1 side Lille, with Arsenal and Marseille also in hot pursuit.
Thauvin, 20, starred as part of the France side that won the Fifa U-20 World Cup in Turkey, defeating Uruguay 4-1 on penalties in Saturday's final.
The Lille attacking midfielder scored three goals at the tournament and his impressive performances in front of watching scouts led to comparisons with former Arsenal player Samir Nasri, now with Manchester City.
Thauvin was signed by Lille from fellow Ligue 1 outfit Bastia in January but was immediately loaned back to the Corsica-based side.
French giants Marseille as well as Premier League sides City, Arsenal and Newcastle United were all reportedly in the chase to sign the player, but were ultimately left disappointed as Thauvin signed up to a hastily arranged £3 million agreement with Lille.
Thauvin has since let it be known he regrets that January move.
His comments have alerted Marseille and their sporting director Jose Anigo who has openly spoken of his desire to sign the player – much to the displeasure of Lille president Michel Seydoux.
Seydoux has repeatedly ruled out a sale, but SportsDirect News understands continuing pressure from Thauvin to force through a move may yet tempt the club into accepting an offer for a player now valued at £8-10m.
Now returned from international duty, Thauvin is keen to resolve the situation in the coming days, with Arsenal, City and Marseille all expected to be keeping a close eye on events in the determination not to miss out on the player a second time.
Speaking to reporters, Thauvin said: “My future? I don't know.
“I'm going to have to sit down and talk with my advisers in the next few days and meet with my club to see what the situation is.”
